Jeep first introduced the 4xe powertrain to the Wrangler in 2021, making it the first Jeep to ever use electric power. The following year, the plug-in hybrid power was expanded the Grand Cherokee lineup to enhance fuel efficiency and performance both on and off the road. Its hybrid power comes from a powerful turbocharged engine paired with an electric vehicle system. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup is available here at Bedford Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Here on this page, we’d like to tell you about the hybrid power of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. Continue reading below to learn more!

How is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Powered?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers optimal performance and fuel economy with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. The standard layout of any PHEV is one or more electric motors, a rechargeable battery pack, and an internal combustion engine. For the Grand Cherokee 4xe, this includes an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, a 400-volt, 17.3-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack, and a turbocharged two-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The engine-mounted electric motor replaces the Grand Cherokee’s traditional alternator for a seamless transition between gas and electric power. Meanwhile, the transmission’s electric motor replaces the traditional torque converter to provide instantaneous torque to the wheels. The battery pack is placed under the rear seat with a water-tight seal to keep it protected from the elements. It is recharged by an external power source with a traditional EV charger. The 4xe system gives the Grand Cherokee 4xe 375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of instant torque, 56 MPGe, a 470-mile total driving range, and 25 miles of all-electric driving.

Can I Control the Grand Cherokee 4xe's Battery Usage?

To give drivers a way to control their Grand Cherokee 4xe’s usage, Jeep created the E-Selec drive modes. The default mode is Hybrid, which prioritizes electric power to maintain the vehicle’s speed until more power is requested. Hybrid mode provides the best of both worlds: maximum power, instant torque, and phenomenal fuel efficiency. The Electric mode can be used as long as the battery has at least 1% of its charge remaining and emits nearly zero tailpipe emissions. Each time you press the accelerator pedal, you’ll feel the rush of instant electrified torque. Lastly, E-Save mode disengages the EV system, running only on gas power to save the battery’s power. Additionally, it allows the battery to recharge itself through regenerative braking. E-Save mode is automatically turned on when the battery pack is depleted.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Charging Methods

With the purchase of a new Grand Cherokee 4xe, you get a Level I EV charger. This is capable of 120 volts and plugs into a traditional household plug. It provides the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s battery with a full charge in roughly 14 hours. However, owners can purchase a Level II at-home charging station to cut the charging time down to just two hours with 240 volts. The professionally-installed Level II charger is wired directly to the electrical system in your home. Jeep gets its chargers from QMerit, a leading manufacturer of EV chargers. The Level II charging station can also be paired with your home’s WiFi network, allowing you to track and control your 4xe’s charging. Additionally, it allows the charger to send notifications to your smartphone to let you know when electricity is the cheapest, allowing you to choose the best time to charge your Grand Cherokee 4xe.

What is Regenerative Braking?

Regenerative braking, or brake regeneration, is how an electric vehicle recharges its own battery pack while the vehicle is running. When the brake pads press against the rotors, lots of friction is created. The regenerative braking system takes this kinetic energy, converts it into electricity, and sends it back to the battery to increase or maintain its state of charge. While this happens automatically, Jeep created Max Regen, which uses a more aggressive regenerative braking calibration to create more energy and send it back to the battery, recharging it quicker.
