Tips to Avoid Drowsy Driving

If you are on a long road trip, or driving late at night, it is very important to be aware about drowsy driving and knowing how to avoid it. Many drivers think they could drive well while tired, but drowsy driver isn’t able to make decisions as fast as he/she usually can, and their response time is also much slower.  Here are a few tips to avoid drowsy driving on road trips.

  • Short Hauls

The shorter the road trip, the less likely you are to become a drowsy driver. Plan trips that are short and take breaks to stretch, eat and revive yourself. If you’re going a far distance, break the trip into a shorter haul, so you’re not driving a long distance. You can alternate with another driver or stop and spend the night at a hotel to get some rest.

  • Be aware of signs you’re a drowsy driver.

Knowing the signs that you’re a drowsy driver will help you to determine when you need to pull over and rest. If you’re missing exits, can’t remember the last few miles you drove, feeling agitated and of course tired, it’s safe to say, you’re a drowsy driver.

  • Drive during the day.

If you’re a parent of small children, you probably like driving at night while your children are asleep. However, this is an unsafe time for you to drive as you may be drowsy as well if you didn’t prepare by sleeping before the trip. Driving during the day would be ideal since it’s when you’re more alert and able to make good decisions on the road.

  • Avoid taking medication and sleeping aids.

Avoid long term use of medication for sleep especially anxiety as they can make you drowsier in the long run. Also, be sure to read all of the labels on any other your medicine you take.
