Off Road Capabilities of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator

After a several decade long hiatus Jeep is back to making trucks again with the all-new 2020 Gladiator. Inspired by the Jeep Wrangler the Gladiator is the only pickup truck in its league to offer open-air freedom. The Gladiator is available as either a two-door or four-door vehicle with a five-foot steel bed. All versions of the Gladiator come with a Trail Rated badge boasting the Gladiator’s off-road capabilities.

The all-new Gladiator wouldn’t be a Jeep without uncompromising off-road capability. The two lower trims come standard with a Command-Trac 4x4 system. The system features a heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a 3.73 rear axle ratio, and a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio.

The top tier Jeep Gladiator Rubicon comes with a Rock-Trac 4x4 system. Tru-Lok locking differentials come standard along with heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a ”4LO” ratio of 4:1 and a 4.10 front and rear axle ratio. The Gladiator Rubicon also features a segment-exclusive electronic sway-bar disconnect. When equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission the Rubicon has a crawl ratio of 84.2:1 and 77.2:1 when paired with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Both 4x4 systems feature full-time torque management allowing optimal grip in low-traction conditions.

All versions of the Gladiator have an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, breakover angle of 20.3 degrees, departure angle of 26 degrees, ground clearance of 11.1 inches, and up to 30 inches of water fording. You will also find front and rear tow hooks and skid plates on the Gladiator.

At launch the Gladiator will be equipped with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine making 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Pentastar V-6 engine comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission.  An eight-speed automatic transmission is optional for all models. Starting in 2020 Jeep will offer a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine for the Gladiator. The EcoDiesel engine is rated to make 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. To handle the increased torque amount the engine comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The impressive engine and body on frame design of the Gladiator allows for a best-in-class payload of 1,600 pounds and up to 7,650 pounds.

Designed with functionality and versatility in mind the five-foot steel bed on the Gladiator comes equipped with under-rail bed lighting, strong integrated tie-downs, an available covered external power source, and an available Trail Rail Cargo Management System. The Rubicon model comes standard with cargo bed rock rails, and a protective cab. Optional features include a spray-in bed liner, tonneau cover, and bed divider.
