2022 Jeep Compass vs Toyota Corolla Cross

Shopping for a new crossover SUV is overwhelming. As you may have noticed, it’s quickly become one of the most popular vehicle segments in the automobile industry. Being that popular, brands with crossover models are in fierce competition to be the best. One car, in particular, made its mark in the class long before it was as popular as it is today. The Jeep Compass is a top competitor in the crossover segment due to its SUV-like road presence and car-like handling, among many other excellent features. Competing with the Compass is a new model, the Toyota Corolla Cross, which gives the Corolla an SUV body and interior. Continue reading below as we give you an inside look at both models to help you decide which one is right for you.

2022 Jeep Compass Power & Handling

The 2022 Jeep Compass lineup is powered by a 2.4-Liter Inline-4 cylinder engine that supplies drivers with 177 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque. As standard equipment for the Sport and Latitude trims, the engine is linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. Available to these trims and standard for the rest of the lineup is Active Drive 4x4, driven by a 9-speed automatic transmission. Active Drive is a full-time 4x4 system with a disconnecting rear axle. Active Drive offers superior handling in challenging road conditions by sensing a loss of traction and seamlessly engaging the rear wheels without any driver input to regain grip. Then, when driving on dry roads, Active Drive will disengage the rear wheels to save on fuel.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Power & Handling

Powering the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross lineup is a 2.0L I-4 engine that offers 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Like the Compass, the Corolla Cross comes with front-wheel drive. However, the power is delivered by a continuously variable transmission (CVT). To better handle inclement weather and road conditions, the Corolla Cross is available with all-wheel drive. However, this system doesn’t offer the same level of capability as Jeep’s Active Drive 4x4.

2022 Jeep Compass Features & Design

Jeep overhauled the Compass ahead of the 2022 model year, completely redesigning the interior and refreshing the front and rear exterior fascias. Standard exterior features now include LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a broadened seven-slot grille, and a more aggressive front end. Higher trim levels have exterior features like cornering LED fog lights, a single-pane or panoramic sunroof, remote start, and 17, 18, or 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, drivers are greeted by premium cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment touchscreen, cordless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, new slim air ducts, and rear air ducts. Features inside the higher trim levels include a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch or 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a wireless charging pad, power-adjustable front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, heated front seats/steering wheel, heated rear seats, and more.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross Features & Design

To create the Corolla Cross, Toyota essentially took the Corolla and blended it with the RAV4. Looking at the Corolla Cross head-on, you’ll find a large black grille flanked by LED headlights inside slim housings. Down the sides, you’ll notice standard 17-inch steel wheels with plastic Toyota covers and black plastic cladding on the wheel wells and along the rocker panels. Upon entering, you’ll find cloth upholstery, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, corded Apple/Android smartphone connectivity, and rear-seat air ducts. The Corolla Cross’ higher trim levels compete better with its Jeep counterpart, adding things like 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 7-inch digital driver information display, and a sunroof.

Conclusion:

In its first-ever model year, the Toyota Corolla Cross positions itself as a tough competitor for the Jeep Compass. However, it is no match for the standard and available features, all-terrain capability, and style of the redesigned Compass.
