For the first time in its 80 year history, Jeep is launching itself into the world of hybrid vehicles, starting with the world-renowned Wrangler! The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe will not only be the most efficient Wrangler on the road but also arguably one of the most capable! The 4xe is a plug-in hybrid that is rated for up to a whopping 49 miles per gallon gas equivalent. The Wrangler 4xe employs a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 cylinder engine which, alone, produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. For the Wrangler 4xe, the turbocharged engine is mated to two electric motors, one on the cylinder head and one in front of the transmission, powered by a 400-volt battery pack underneath the rear seat. This hybrid setup boosts those numbers up to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque! The 4xe can also get up to 49 MPG and has a total driving range of 379 miles. The 4xe uses a Level I TurboDX charger, which comes with the 4xe, while a Level II charger is available for purchase to charge the 4xe in 2 hours instead of 12. The 4xe also employs regenerative braking to charge the battery while the vehicle is braking or slowing down. Regenerative braking also helps slow the vehicle down to put less pressure on the brake pads, which helps extend their life. The 4xe will come with E-Selec drive modes to allow drivers to choose between hybrid, electric, and gas power. Hybrid mode uses electric power first and engages the gas engine when more power is requested by the driver pressing the gas pedal. Electric mode uses only electric power with a range of up to 21 miles of zero-emissions driving. The last available drive mode is E-Save which turns off the electric generators and only uses the gas engines. This saves the electric power for a later time to be used for a silent, open-air ride through nature.

In the past, there has been a common assumption that a hybrid vehicle sacrifices performance or capability for fuel efficiency. This assumption could not be more wrong when talking about the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe! As we previously mentioned, the 470 lb-ft of torque is instantly available thanks to the electric power. Off-road enthusiasts will love this because it will give them better control and more precise handling on rough terrain. This instant torque will also be useful on pavement, giving drivers a much easier time merging onto the highway and smoother acceleration. The Wrangler 4xe is still a Wrangler, meaning it has earned Jeep's coveted Trail Rated badge with a legendary 4x4 system, Dana 44 solid front and rear axles, and a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. The Wrangler 4xe can make its way through up to 30 inches of water because of the battery pack's location under the back seat, where it is heavily protected, sealed electrical connections, and an air intake that's placed high under the hood. Much like the gas-powered Wrangler Rubicon, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe gets enhanced capability with 33-inch all-terrain tires, high-clearance fender flares, Tru-Lok front and rear locking differentials, a Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, and more. 

The 4xe is an extension of the Wrangler lineup with three of its own trim levels. The 4xe still offers the open-air freedom of the traditional Wrangler that Jeep fans love with the removable roof, removable doors, and fold-down windshield. It will also bring some of the top-level Wrangler features like leather-trimmed upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, and a 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system. And that's just the entry-level 4xe Sahara! The Rubicon focuses on providing superior off-road capability with the added features we mentioned above as well as Surf Blue accents to stand out.
