2020 Jeep Compass vs 2020 Nissan Rogue

The SUV classically was built to be a highly capable transport that offers more spacious interiors and carrying capacity compared to a sedan; with modern models, the compact crossover is a great bridge between larger 3-row SUVs and sedans bringing enhanced maneuverability and comfortable interiors. On the current market, the 2020 Jeep Compass and 2020 Nissan Rogue are two that stick out, each well delivering on the finer aspects of what we hope to see in a modern model. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at each and decide which is our top pick overall.

2020 Jeep Compass Power & Handling

Coming outfitted with each 2020 Jeep Compass is a capable 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-4 engine that can produce up to 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This engine more than powers the Compass to perform on and off the road, giving the SUV a solid 2,000 lbs of tow capacity and over 30mpg fuel economy rating while on the highway. Jeep also gives a few choices with the powertrain in general, offering a choice between front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive systems as well as a choice between a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, and nine-speed automatic transmission options.

2020 Nissan Rogue Power & Handling

Nissan looks to outfit the Rogue with a capable four-cylinder engine, bringing in a decent 2.5-liter Inline-4 engine. This engine is a reasonable addition but falls slightly shy of the Compass’s inline-4 producing a lower power output of 170 horsepower. Nissan also offers a choice between 4x4 and front-wheel-drive configurations, but only offers a single continuously variable transmission option. The overall powertrain found with the Rogue works well together with decent fuel economy; the towing capabilities of the Rogue are modest, only benchmarking 1,102 pounds of max capacity which is about half of what the Compass can tow.

2020 Jeep Compass Features & Design

Jeep offers a few different trim levels with the Compass, that each build off of the previous trim level adding in more and more features with enhanced systems. The base Compass Sport trim level establishes a core set of features brought in to each other model, adding in key features such as dual-zone automatic temperature control, split-folding rear seats for additional storage options, a Uconnect 4 multimedia system on a 7-inch touchscreen display, smartphone apps with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, powered windows with one-touch up/down, and a multitude of safety features that award the Compass with a 5-star overall safety rating by the NHTSA. Working up through the trim models we see other great features added in, such as a larger touchscreen display, a handy 115-volt outlet, remote keyless entry and ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more. Probably the highlight of the trim models is the Compass Trailhawk which adds in a number of off-road-tuned systems and Jeep’s legendary 4x4 system that turns the Compass into one of the most capable off-road explorers.

2020 Nissan Rogue Features & Design

Nissan offers a similar choice to Jeep bringing in three different trim models with the Rogue, but without the off-road-oriented model we see the Compass have access to. The Rogue S is the starting trim level that brings in features such as split-folding seating, a 7-inch touchscreen display, standard air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power windows, manually adjustable driver’s seat, and more. The Rogue has a nice set of starting features but misses out on some higher-end features we see Jeep make standard with each Compass, such as the dual-zone automatic climate control system. Nissan does offer most of these features at higher trim models but requires you to purchase a more expensive model or optional packages to include them. Throughout the rest of the trim models, Nissan continues to add in some great features we see Jeep also offer, such as heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and upholstery set, SiriusXM radio, and some others.

Conclusion:

The 2020 Nissan Rogue is a decent crossover SUV model that has a decent power output from its four-cylinder engine but doesn’t quite match up to the metrics pushed out by the Jeep Compass that has a higher tow capacity and power output. The Compass also is able to be configured as an off-road exploring machine when outfitted with the features from the Trailhawk trim model offering unparalleled off-road capability. If we were to pick a winner between these two excellent crossover SUVs, we’d have to give the win to the 2020 Jeep Compass. The Compass has a nice progression of features with a strong starting feature list, a stronger powertrain, and an overall higher safety rating.
