2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

With the 2019 Grand Cherokee, Jeep brings five different powertrains to the table bringing a diverse selection of power and performance. Coming standard across most trim levels within the Grand Cherokee is a capable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that pushes out 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This base engine works with the Grand Cherokee’s 8-speed automatic transmission to put up a solid 19/26 mpg city/highway fuel efficiency. Jeep also offers a number of V6 and V8 engines each increasing in performance and output; the most powerful engine the Grand Cherokee can feature is a 6.2-liter supercharged V8. This powertrain pushes out an immense 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque giving it the capability to go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds or less. Each Grand Cherokee powertrain comes with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission and can be outfitted with Jeep’s incredible 4x4 all-wheel drive system.

2019 Toyota 4Runner Power & Handling

The Toyota 4Runner only comes with a single-engine option giving a decent powertrain but limiting your ability to customize or upgrade the performance of your SUV. Standard on each 2019 4Runner you will find a 4.0-liter V6 engine that can push out up to 270 horsepower. The overall performance of this V6 is decent, with a max tow rating of 5,000 pounds, but doesn’t perform as well as any of the engines that the Grand Cherokee offers, including the base engine. The fuel efficiency of the 4Runner is rated to be 17/21 mpg city/highway with a fuel tank capacity of 23 gallons, using more fuel and requiring more fill-ups compared to the Grand Cherokee. The overall maneuverability of the 4Runner is decent with a turn diameter of 37.4 ft but doesn’t quite match the capability of the Grand Cherokee to turn through tight areas.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The Grand Cherokee comes with seven different trim levels, each bringing in a great set of features and technology enhancing the comfort and convenience of the driving experience. Starting at the base Laredo trim level we also see a solid kit of standard features including keyless entry/ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, an infotainment system on a 7-inch touchscreen display with six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth and smartphone integration including both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more. Upgrading to the Limited trim level brings in a number of additional features such as a power liftgate, 115-volt outlet, remote engine ignition, larger 18-inch wheels, heated steering wheel and seats, upgraded leather interior, power-adjustable seats with memory functions, and much more. The Trailhawk trim has off-road enthusiasts covered, bringing in all-terrain tires, electronic rear differential, upgraded suspension with off-road specialized tuning, underbody skid plates and a four-wheel drive configuration that works with Jeeps terrain-selectable traction control system. The remaining trim levels bring in even more luxury and technology into the Grand Cherokee while the high-performance trims that bring in the most powerful engines offer upgraded drivetrain and tuned suspension to further enhance performance.

2019 Toyota 4Runner Features & Design

The Toyota 4Runner also offers seven individual trim levels, bringing in a number of features. With the base SR5 trim level, we see features similar to what is offered with the Grand Cherokee such as adjustable seats, air conditioning, cloth upholstery set, folding rear seats, and an infotainment station on a 6.1-inch touchscreen display with a CD player and USB port. This starting kit is decent, but misses out on some incredible features Jeep offers with the Grand Cherokee such as dual-zone climate control and especially the keyless entry/ignition, which doesn’t show up in any of the 4Runner’s trim levels. Because of the limited powertrain options with the 4Runner, most features work around trying to improve the drivetrain to be more capable of handling off-road performance. With the Grand Cherokee, we saw more customization with the overall structure and engine allowing for better off-road capability. As the 4Runner continues in trim levels they do bring in a number of additional features such as all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, upgraded sound system, keyless entry and ignition, and more. These are decent features, but the Grand Cherokee offers a lot of them at lower trim levels and more overall.

Conclusions

Looking over the 2019 Grand Cherokee and 2019 4Runner, it is no surprise they stand as two of the top picks on the modern automotive market. The 4Runner offers spacious interiors and a decent feature list, but we were a bit more impressed with the Grand Cherokee’s starting lineup of features and progression as you increase in trim levels. The off-road capability and powertrain set of the Grand Cherokee is unparalleled, offering better and more efficient performance even with the base engine level. Overall, we have to give the win here to the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, for having the best and most diverse powertrain lineup, as well as lower-cost feature-packed trim options.
